Abstract:
As a consequence of the recent financial crisis, the regulatory framework requests higher equity capital ratios of banks. However, the business model of a cooperative bank differs from the standard universal bank with regard to governance structures, risk aversion, and various other factors. Therefore, the cooperative banking sector calls for an appropriate inclusion of these factors in the regulatory framework. Based on an empirical examination of Bavarian cooperative banks we show that the Basel 111 capital and liquidity requirements are indeed challenging for several cooperative banks. However, the majority of these firms do not face an existential threat.
