Abstract: This study reflects the successful structural change of cooperative banks in Switzerland and Germany with respect to the legal framework using empirical data. Their strategic challenges are strengthened regulation, new competitors like non- and near banks and technological change. Our research suggests that cooperative banks will need less, but repositioned and newly-arranged branches with the character of local meeting and experience places. New, more experience-orientated mobile banking applications are required.
