Abstract: High unemployment, depopulation and ageing are increasingly shaping rural areas. Using expert interviews, we examine in this qualitative empiric study how far cooperatives can contribute to preserving quality of live in rural areas. Especially within energy and central village supply cooperatives offer an interesting approach. Economic feasibility and the presence of „dray-horses“ are inalienable preconditions for that.
