Abstract: The following paper shows how German social cooperatives currently are being characterized in terms of economic dedication and field of activity, how this phenomenon relates to the social economy and social entrepreneurship, and it explores how the incorporated social cooperative is distinguished from other types of incorporated coops for the purpose of national cooperative statistics. Furthermore, the welfare potential of social cooperatives is discussed, based on recent developments in social policies and welfare related politics.
