Abstract: The topic of digitization is an almost unexplored, new issue in cooperative sciences, but is of great relevance for the future of cooperatives. This article provides a structured overview of key issues around digitization for cooperatives and provides first empirical results on the state of digitization for cooperatives in Switzerland. In addition to a brief review of the literature, an empirical study was carried out on the twenty largest stock companies and cooperatives in Switzerland. This study highlighted that the adoption of selected digitization technologies in cooperatives is significantly lower than in stock companies. The scientific contribution of this article lies, firstly, in the structuring of the problems posed by cooperatives in the context of digitization, and secondly, in providing first results about the empirical reality of the use of digitization technologies. Finally, it provides suggestions for future research.
