Abstract: Commitment research has been dealing with questions of motivation for volunteering for many years. Cooperatives have been considered rather rare. In our research, we have combined approaches of engagement research and general cooperative research to more accurately describe volunteering in product and service cooperatives. The aim of the study was to provide an inventory and an exploratory empirical contribution to the structure and motivation of volunteering in trade and service cooperatives. The results show that cooperatives face the challenge of rejuvenating and diversifying their bodies, and of communicating with members through their own changes.
