Abstract:
Since the beginning of the 2000s, co-operatives have been increasingly founding in the fields of infrastructure, services of general interest and social affairs. In the context of supply problems, especially in rural areas, public interest in these cooperatives is high. So far, however, there is little empirical evidence on this phenomenon. As part of a project at the Cooperative Institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin, based on the founding statistics of the DZ Bank and queries from the Markus corporate database, the founding of co-operatives (establishment of the statute) between 2006 and 2018 in the areas of services of general interest, infrastructure and social system. In particular, it examined where these cooperatives were founded. Are the foundations more likely to be the answer to particular structural weaknesses and problems or do such cooperatives emerge precisely where the founders find particularly good framework conditions and appropriate resources for founding them?
