Abstract:
The founders of the EDEKA-organizations etablished their own credit institute very early in order to promote the grocers which were organized in the EDEKA-Cooperatives. However, the founders had to overcome quite a few obstacles until the establishment of the cooperative bank was achieved. Due to the development after the Second World War the headquarter was moved von Berlin to Hamburg. In 1972 the bank opened for the stock market but kept the principales of the ideas of cooperation. A close contact to the EDEKA-merchants and their needs formed the basement of the success of the bank. The EDEKABANK has played a big part in the development of the cooperative organization of the EDEKA-group which ist nowadays with over 26 % market share the biggest company of the German grocery stores. Now, the EDEKABANK can look back upon very successful hundred years.
