Abstract: Zero waste shops offer a sustainable consumption alternative by renouncing disposable packaging. The article analyzes to what extent zero waste shops are suitable as a new business area for cooperatives and what contribution they can make to sustainable development. The results of a qualitative study of twelve interviews with founders show that a model based on personal values and voluntary commitment has developed in zero waste shops, that is rooted in cooperative principles and values. As places of sustainable consumption as well as through educational offers, cooperatively founded zero waste shops actively promote specific Sustainable Development Goals.
