Abstract:
The European cooperative banking sector has been undergoing a process of consolidation for decades, driven by both organic growth and mergers and acquisitions. This article presents the main motivations for mergers among cooperative banks in Europe and, based on previous research findings, examines the concentration process in the European cooperative banking sector from 2004 to 2023, thereby closing an existing research gap. The study suggests that the concentration process is driven more by organic growth than by mergers. Another finding is that both absolute and relative concentration declined during the period under review.
