Abstract: Cooperation and innovation behavior of Chinese high-tech-companies. Empirical results from Beijing and Shanghai. In the process of technological upgrading and innovation, high-techcompanies in China - as well as in other developing countries - make use of knowledge created in foreign companies or in universities and public research organizations. Beijing and Shanghai represent China’s most innovative regions. This article is based on a quantitative survey among high-tech-companies in both regions that captures the firms’ cooperation patterns. The findings presented here confirm that Chinese high-tech-companies are linked to both sources of knowledge. Cooperation with foreign companies helps to get new ideas and to enter the market with new products whereas cooperation with universities is mainly done to design new products. Thus, the patterns of cooperation show that China’s high-tech firms can absorb new knowledge from different sources. The relative importance of external knowledge sources, however, differs between both regions and reflects regional development paths
