Abstract: The article is focused on the evolution of emerging industries based on the concepts of path dependency, path creation and path plasticity. Based on an analysis of the evolution of the IT sector in two regions of Slovakia - Bratislava and Košice - it explores to what extent was the emergence of new industries influenced by the former industrial mix and the formal and informal institutions established in the preceding periods.
