Abstract:
German organizational skill – economic-historical roots of a national stereotype. Foreigners often identify Germans as born organizers. Cultural psychologists derive the asserted characteristic from history: small territories, the trauma of Thirty Years’ War, enlightenment, Prussian discipline. But stereotype building needs strong impressions. Proven is the spectacular economic success the Germans had during Kaiserreich and Nazi regime, which was due to nonliberal organizational methods like cartels. After World War II, cartels were banned, and the nonliberal organizational tradition is mostly forgotten due to negative remembrance policy.
