Abstract:
Customs statistics on foreign trade are the main source of the items showing trade in goods, both in the balance of payments prepared by the Banque de France and in the national accounts. It may therefore seem surprising that the figures published for the same year are not the same in all documents. The differences are explained by the fact that the statistical and accounting requirements of each institution are not the same. The need to present trade in goods consistently with all other transactions shown, both in the balance of payments and the rest-of-the-world account leads the Banque de France and INSEE to make certain adjustments to customs data. The object of this paper is to explain these adjustments.
