Abstract:
The aim of this article is to study in more depth the notion of sigma-convergence, based on a very simple statistical indicator, namelythevariance, andusedtodescribetheconvergenceofGDPperheadforagroupofcountries. Thesame varianceinGDPperheadcaninfactcorrespondtoGDPstructuresthatareverydifferent,i.e.toeconomicsituationsthat arethemselvesverydifferent. ItisthereforenecessaryalsotodescribetheevolutionofthestructureofGDP. Generalised principal component analysis is a statistical tool permitting such a description. The last part of the article deals with modifications in the structure of GDPfor countries in the euro zone between 1971 and 2000.
