Abstract: Theaim ofthis article is to analyse intandem the choiceof mothers withyoungchildren toworkandtheirdecision to use childcareservices,thefocusbeingontheimpactofthecostofcare.First,amultinomiallogitmodelisusedtocontrastthe following threesituations: (1) non-work, (2) workandintra-household orunpaidchildcare, (3) workand paidchildcare. Thedistinctionbetweenpart-timeandfull-timeworkis thenintroduced. ThedataaretakenfromaFrenchlocalsurveyof coupleswithpreschoolchildren.Thestudyshowsthatthecostofcarehasanegativeeffectontheprobabilitythatmothers will work, whether full-time or part-time, and use paid care.
