Abstract:
This paper investigates the connectionsbetween the size offirms and the wages of the newly hird workers inFrances. We present estimates controlling for numerous variables representing individual and job characteristics and find significant size-wage gaps. We show that they are not due to unobservable employee characteristics. Nor, in all likelihood, are they entirely dueto working conditions. Testing a selection model, we findthatlarge firms paymoreforeach year of schooling and that the size-wage gap is wider for high-skilled workers. We detect an employee selection bias that is positive in small firms and negative in large firms.
