Abstract: In this paper, we study the impact of remittances on environment, with a focus of deforestation in developing countries. From a theoretical point of view, the role of remittances on deforestation is a priori unclear. Then, we investigate this relationship using a sample of 102 developing countries covering the period from 1990 to 2005. The profile observed for the GDP per capita does not support the hypothesis of the environmental Kuznets curve, while the share of remittances in GDP reduces the rate of deforestation.
