Croissance pro-pauvres dans des pays du Moyen-Orient et de l'Afrique du Nord

Abstract: The article analyzes the impact of the economic growth on the monetary poverty of nine Middle-East and North Africa countries (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Jordan, Mauritania, and Yemen) between 1990-2004. To characterize the nature of the growth of these countries and to formulate the suitable policies and strategies which would make it possible to reduce poverty, we have built the indicators of growth and policies pro-poor of Kakwani and Pernia (2000) and of Kakwani (1993, 2001). The empirical results show that the point estimations of these indicators are not very precise. The confidence intervals do not allow specifying clearly the nature of the growth, in particular in the case of the Yemen, Morocco and Egypt. Furthermore, for Tunisia, Iran and Turkey, 95 % confidence interval for IGIT is [2, 4.6], which is indicative of the difficulty to recommend the appropriate pro-poor strategies.
