Abstract:
This article is one of the first econometric studies of the effect of bank-microfinance complementarity on financial intermediation in WAEMU. We use the FMOLS panel method to regress over the period 1980?2019 the financial intermediation variables (loans, deposits, financial deepening) on an indicator of bank-microfinance complementarity and various control variables. The results show that the effect of bank-microfinance complementarity, in relative terms, increases financial intermediation in WAEMU. The study recommends deepening deposit and loan relationships between banks and microfinance institutions (MFIs), reducing competition between banks and MFIs, and strengthening the financial viability of MFIs, with a view to expanding the area of financial intermediation in WAEMU.
