Revue d’économie du développement, 2023, vol. 33, issue 1, 5-53

Abstract: According to the FAO, 8.9 million hectares of forests were destroyed every year in the world between 2010 and 2015. This deforestation is induced by economic activities satisfying national demand or geared towards export. In this case, it is consumption in importing countries that induces deforestation. How much of global deforestation can be attributed to international trade? We adapted an ?environmentally extended input-output approach? to the deforestation issue by combining data on international flows of goods and services and deforestation for 189 countries. Between 2010 and 2015, trade-induced deforestation accounted for 24% of global deforestation. Our results make it possible to prioritize actions and underline that it is essential to adopt a systemic approach and policy instruments targeting the upstream and downstream of the ?value chains?.
