Abstract:
Maurice CATIN et Christophe VAN HUFFEL Despite a dramatic growth since 1978, China shows an increasing dualism between its coastal provinces highly integrated in the world economy and its relatively autarkical hinterland provinces. This paper shows that government institutional choices have largely contributed to this dichotomy, leading to growing regional disparities. On the one hand, the country?s gradual opening to trade has led the coastal region to become the driving force behind the Chinese growth. On the other hand, the limited internal openness slows down the diffusion of development through internal provinces.
