Abstract:
We assess the relationships between local diversification and migration. Remittances can alleviate the liquidity constraint and thus stimulate local activities. In turn, the capital accumulated from non-farm activities may alleviate the barrier of migration costs. By drawing on original data collected in 2006 and 2007 in two Senegalese rural municipalities, we deal with this reverse causality problem and show that migration and local diversification are substitutable.
