Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of the current economic crisis on migration flows between 2000 and 2010. The econometric study with tests of non-causality in heterogeneous panels shows that the economic crisis affects migration, particularly in recent immigration countries, such as Spain, Ireland and Italy. Migration to these countries seem to be dependent on fluctuations and economic downturns, as for the traditional immigration countries during the 20th century. Finally, the relationship is not universal and constant over time, due to a relatively high degree of heterogeneity between countries.
