Abstract:
In this paper, we develop a method based on monetary aggregate and index number theories to estimate the size of the microfinance institutions (MFI) relative to the banking sector. The method is applied to WAEMU countries over the period 1993-2008. The findings suggest a speedy growth of MFIs? relative size in Benin, Burkina Faso and Togo, while it remains moderate in the remaining countries. Denouncing the failure of financial liberalization policies aimed at financial unification, these results stress the role of these new intermediaries in explaining the financial architecture of WAEMU countries, with certain financial policy implications.
