Land Use Change and its Drivers in the Transboundary Shenzhen River Catchment, China

Abstract: This study examines land use change in a river catchment from a transboundary perspective using the Shenzhen River Catchment in China as a case study. By analyzing remote sensing images taken in 1993 and 2013, results highlight the asymmetric development across the administrative border. The Hong Kong side remains largely rural with a well-preserved Ramsar site, while its Shenzhen counterpart experiences rapid urbanization. Preliminary investigation of land use change drivers suggests divergent political, economic and social circumstances have shaped the contrasting landscape. The authors recommend the implementation of a transboundary Strategic Environmental Assessment for better spatial planning and wetland protection in this border region.
