Abstract:
Using the case study of the ?land of cloves? located on the eastern coast of Madagascar, this paper aims to describe the articulation of rural households? vulnerabilities over time and space by using data from rural observatories. The analytical framework of livelihoods allows us to identify the strategies that the households adopt in order to adapt to the risky and uncertain rural contexts. Indeed, there are climate hazards such as cyclones, as well as shocks in the global clove market, with this sector representing the main source of monetary income for rural households. In this paper, long-term trend tracking, such as looking at demographic changes and activities system development, allows us to understand structural vulnerability factors.
