Abstract:
The article presents an overview of the traditional literature on microenterprises in the informal sector, focusing on the debate around segments identification. Subsequently, it confronts this theoretical background with the results of exploratory field surveys conducted in the Mono department of Benin and with the literature on the popular economy. The conclusive remarks question the validity of the current design of many development aid programs aiming to support microenterprises through microcredit and business development services.
