Abstract: The aim of this article is to compare the macroeconomic development performance of a set of eighty small island territories with respect to their political status and the degree of sovereignty achieved. We first construct four institutional profiles (full integration, autonomy, limited sovereignty, and full sovereignty) based on a modified composite index of sovereignty proposed by Alberti and Goujon (2020). Secondly, we carry out mean-comparison tests on twenty-six criteria. In the end, we find that autonomous islands within the affiliated group are more economically developed, socially advanced, and demographically mature than other institutional groups.
