Abstract:
The ?suburban juvenile delinquent? has become a major theme in the media. Two characteristics are frequently associated with this figure: his opposition to the educational institution and his inability to disengage from his milieu. Based on sociological research, this article shows that, when a head-on opposition does exist?which is not always the case?it is caused by an unwanted situation of domination within the educational institution, rather than by a rejection of the aims and values promoted by this institution. Taking a trajectory perspective, it also considers how delinquents give up on their ?career? at some point and examines the factors that foster this likely giving up.
