Abstract:
As early as the 1930s, the construction of the microeconomics of the firm, which conceptualizes an enterprise as being akin to a producer maximizing his/her profit, was immediately criticized for its lack of realism, specifically by Ronald Coase. In analyzing the entrepreneur?s choice as subjective and facing uncertainty, this author rejects the standard theory of decision. Moreover, by introducing into the analysis a new choice faced by the entrepreneur, between firm and market, he suggests an explanation of the existence of firms, which will be based on new institutionalist theories of the firm emerging in the 1970s.
