Abstract: The way the poor spend their money is often considered irrational and inconsistent, especially if their expenditures are not related to strict necessity. However, studies on how the poor use their money converge to describe them as highly competent consumers. They have to juggle between many resources: money is one of them, but social ties are also vital in order to face up to financial deprivation. These constraints must be taken into account in order to understand how poor people manage their money. Focusing on rationality may hide the social structure that frames poor people?s consumption.
