Le salaire minimum en perspective historique

Jérôme Gautié, Julie Oudot and Hugo Subtil

Regards croisés sur l'économie, 2020, vol. n° 27, issue 2, 133-141

Abstract: The debate over the minimum wage dates back to the end of the nineteenth century. It refers to different dimensions of fairness: a living wage; a fair wage (i.e., one that prevents exploitation); an instrument to reduce inequalities. However, the minimum wage is not always the best tool to fight against poverty. The idea of introducing some minimum wage norm at the European level is much discussed, and, at the national level, the COVID crisis has induced new debates over the remuneration of frontline workers.
