Abstract:
It is widely believed that culture should be protected and preserved, which has led to similar views being expressed towards its commercial cultural products. The emergence of Korean pop music or K-pop tells a very different story – that of an industry that has been willing to embrace the opportunities provided by globalization and digitization as a new channel for disseminating cultural products. Furthermore, the strategic utilization of copyrights by the relevant entertainment companies has helped to amplify the diffusion of K-pop around the world. As a result, K-pop has emerged as a new component of global cultural diversity while Korea’s soft power has been significantly strengthened.
