La valeur travail à l’intersection de l’économie politique et de la théorie de l’histoire de Marx

Gérard Duménil and Dominique Lévy

Regards croisés sur l'économie, 2023, vol. n° 32, issue 1, 52-60

Abstract: Setting aside the controversy known as the “transformation problem”, which treats erroneously value theory as the foundation of the theory of relative prices, the emphasis is placed on the key role of value theory in the analysis of exploitation in capitalism. On this basis, we draw the boundaries of the field of applicability of the concept of labour value in capitalism, placing this theory at the intersection of Marx’s political economy and theory of history. The article finally suggests the transition from capitalism to a new mode of production, called managerialism, in which the explanatory power of a concept of value would have to be determined.
