Abstract:
Studies based on macroeconomic data have shown that homeownership and unemployment rates are positively correlated in Europe and in United-States. This stylised fact has given rise to several studies based on individual data from United-States, Denmark or Great-Britain, which have produced contradictory results. The present work offers an econometric study that adds to this literature. We estimate the effect of homeownership on individual unemployment duration using the French « tde-mlt » survey from which a data set is extracted, taking into account censoring and non random selection of individuals into their residential status. Our results indicate that homeownership exerts a significant positive effect on unemployment duration. Classification JEL : C41, J6, R21
