Impact des barrières aux échanges sur la croissance économique. Le cas de la Chine

Sandra Poncet () and Shang-Jin Wei

Revue économique, 2005, vol. 56, issue 3, 735-744

Abstract: This paper evaluates the impact of trade barriers on economic growth using data on Chinese provinces. It follows a two step procedure. First, it measures regional trade barriers using a price-based methodology developed by Parsley and Wei [2001]. Second, it then embeds this measure of trade barriers into a cross-province economic growth framework, estimated with the gmm method. The evidence suggests that higher regional trade barriers are systematically associated with lower economic growth.
