Abstract:
This paper investigates the determinants of a firm?s export decision and focuses on the identification of spillovers from neighboring firms. I use a panel of French manufacturers that started to export to at least one of 67 countries over the 1986-1992 period. Detailed data on the location of firms as well as on the destinations of their exports allow to analyse the presence of spillovers across firms exporting to different countries, and to study the impact of spillovers on the spatial concentration of exporters. Results show evidence of the existence of export spillovers. However, a selection effect of the most productive firms to the most difficult markets may potentially lessen the impact of spillovers on firms exporting to these countries. Classification JEL : F1, R12, L25.
