Abstract:
From Walras to Debreu, the history of general equilibrium analysis went through three major episodes, each linked to a different place. In Lausanne, Walras builds the first general equilibrium equations as an element of a global social science. In Vienna, in the early 1930s, Wald is the first to give mathematical solutions to the question of the existence of a general equilibrium. At last, in the 1950s, within the Cowles Commission, Arrow and Debreu give the first modern demonstration of such an existence. This essay in genealogy is thus restricted to these existence demonstrations, leaving apart many other dimensions of the initial walrasian program. Classification JEL : B1, B2, D5
