Abstract: This article measures the effect of family ceo successions on French firms? performance. First, we compare changes in operating profitability following a transition. Secondly, we assess the effect of dynastic transitions on the probability of default. Using a unique firm-level dataset on ceo transitions among French firms, we find that 20% of defaults following a ceo transition are due to dynastic successions. Classification JEL : G34, G33, D24
