Abstract:
Based on new developments in migration theory, this paper develops a model which includes both traditional and new migration determinants. An empirical application is implemented for European immigration from Southern Mediterranean Countries (smcs). Results show that migrations are not only explained by differences in income levels. They also depend on a set of many other variables, such as income inequality, differences in unemployment and costs of living, the education level of the migrants, human networks, differences in languages, border effects, migration policy as well as non economic determinants, including climate, environment as well as religion.
