Revenus féminins et désunion en Europe

Revue économique, 2012, vol. 63, issue 2, 235-260

Abstract: The empirical literature shows, first, that the relationship between women?s incomes and the risk of marital disruption differs from one study to the other, and second, that the European studies on this topic are very rare. Therefore, we test this relationship for ten European countries using the data of the European Community Households Panel. We find a positive relationship between women?s income and the risk of disruption. The positive relationship is mainly due to the two opposite extreme situations: housewives having no personal income at all (low risk of disruption) and active wives whose income represents a large part or the whole of the couple?s income (high risk of disruption).
