Abstract:
We use the first regulation on the capital requirements on Chinese banks in 2004 to examine the exogenous impact of these requirements on bank efficiency.?We measure efficiency on a panel of 100 banks for the period 2004-2009 with the Battese and Coelli [1995]?s model.?We find that capital requirements have a positive impact on bank efficiency.?We conclude then that the positive influence of capital requirements on efficiency strengthens its beneficial impact on financial stability.?Our findings are in favor of tighter capital requirements in China to reduce the risks of financial instability.
