73, issue 4, 499-528

Abstract: This study first develops a simple theoretical model highlighting the positive effect of the saving and loan mechanism on the repayment performance of group lending. This theoretical model is then tested on survey data from a microfinance institution in Togo using logistic regression. The propensity score matching method is also used to account for possible selection biases. The results robustly show that the savings and loan mechanism has a positive impact on the repayment performance of group lending.
