Abstract:
The aim of this article is to understand the role of local network effects and spatial effects in the development of digital platforms, through the example of the carpooling site iDVROOM. This site is a two-sided platform (Rochet et Tirole [2003]), but with two specificities: 1) most users are on both sides of the platform (both drivers and passengers) and 2) users interact locally, most often within communities. We analyze the impact of the number of registered users and active communities on the growth of the platform. Based on data covering the period from 2015 to 2018, we show that carpooling activity in a city is stimulated both by the creation of communities and by the user base in that city and in neighbouring cities. However, network effects are moderated by the local nature of interactions between platform users.
