Abstract:
When do people tend to believe that a phenomenon x was the cause of a subsequent phenomenon y? We suggest that the subjective sense of causality would emerge only if x explains y, for example, in the sense of reducing its Kolmogorov complexity. We also discuss the relationship of explanation to predictability as sources of the subjective sense of causality in more general set-ups. JEL Codes: D80.
