Abstract:
This note reports on an experiment in historical research on French policy in Yugoslavia between 1988 and 1992. In order to understand how François Mitterrand, surrounded by the agents of the Quai d?Orsay and the staff of the Élysée Palace, conceived and carried out this policy, numerous hitherto unstudied public and private archives have been consulted. These numerous written and oral sources, the quantity of which varies according to the period, were mainly produced in the context of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. Their accessibility is limited, with public archives that can be consulted by exception. What are the consequences of these characteristics on the work of the researcher ? What uses can be made of these sources ? How was the research methodology adapted to the sources encountered ?
