L’alignement de l’église orthodoxe russe sur le bellicisme du Kremlin

Grégoire Philippenko

Revue d'études comparatives Est-Ouest, 2022, vol. N° 1, issue 1, 167-193

Abstract: Since the end of the USSR, Russian Orthodox Church doctrine about warfare has veered toward warmongering and ultimately led to Patriarch Kirill?s support for the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. The Church?s doctrine has been aligned on the state?s. Despite the Church endorsing a ?just war? doctrine in 2000, several symbols and discourses have been reconstrued in a hawkish reinterpretation of this doctrine?a shift to be set down to the sway of conservatives in the Church who have special relations with state authorities. The Church has officially justified the wars conducted by Russia since 2008 by extolling military engagements and declaring the defense of the homeland to be a sacred duty.
