Abstract:
After a brief analysis of Sino-Romanian economic relations and of projects related to the Belt and Road Initiative in Romania, this article identifies the actors and factors in Sino-Romanian relations that orient this initiative?s deployment. Chinese strategies for promoting and implementing BRI projects are examined. Based on sources written in Romanian and Mandarin Chinese, as well as approximately sixty interviews conducted in China, Romania and other European countries, this article brings to light the diplomatic actions (administrative, institutional, ideological and cultural) whereby China manages to ally itself with diverse Romanian actors in order to overcome the geopolitical barriers to the implementation of the BRI that stem from the influence of the United States.
