Abstract:
The concepts of cognitive distance and absorptive capacities are essential to understand learning and innovation processes, especially in Interfirm cooperation. The aim of this contribution is to realize a detailed analysis of the links between these two concepts. In a first part we will analyze the role of intra-firm cognitive distances for the development of « inward looking » and « outward looking » absorptive capacities. In a second part of this work, we will stress the importance of meta-cognitive skills, in the ability to learn from different sources of knowledge. This work highlights more complex and richer links than usually evoked in the economic literature, as well as the implications for organizational learning and innovation.
